Trump is under criminal investigation for attempting to overturn the 2020 election

Former US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Special Investigator Jack Smith informed him that he is under investigation by the US Department of Justice in his efforts to overturn the outcome of the 2020 elections, which means that he is likely to be convicted of federal crimes, according to Bloomberg.

And “CNN” quoted Trump as saying in a post on “Truth Social”: “The deranged Jack Smith, the special attorney for Joe Biden’s Department of Justice, sent a letter saying that I am the subject of a grand jury investigation on January 6 (the attack on the Capitol), and he awarded me Four days to appear before the jury, which always means arrest and indictment."

Trump received a letter earlier this year, from Jack Smith, just before he was indicted in the investigation into the mishandling of classified documents.

Trump refused to accept the outcome of the November 2020 elections after losing to Joe Biden, and on January 6, 2021, two weeks before Biden was sworn in, he delivered a speech to his supporters, who then stormed the Capitol building during the congressional certification session on the results of the presidential elections, in what was considered an attempt to stop the process.

And US lawmakers blamed Trump for the storming, considering that his "inflammatory rhetoric" in which he claimed to have stolen the elections and falsified the result without evidence, was the reason for the storming, as well as his efforts to "overturn the election result."

CNN said a spokesperson for the special counsel declined to comment.

The network stated that a letter from the federal prosecutor to Trump means that the prosecution "focuses on Trump's actions in the investigation that overturned the outcome of the 2020 elections, and not just those around him who helped stop his defeat in the elections."

So far, the focus has been on the actions of the lawyers Trump hired to try to halt his defeat in the election and their statements alleging election fraud.

Ministry of Justice rules allow the public prosecutor to inform persons under investigation that they have become a target for investigation.

Informing the person that they are the target of the investigation is often a strong sign that an accusation will follow, but, likely, the person will not be charged in the end.
