Policeman Convicted of Killing George Floyd Stabbed in Prison

Source: The News.

According to the New York Times, Derek Chauvin, the American police officer convicted of killing African-American George Floyd, was stabbed and injured by another inmate in a federal prison in Tucson, Arizona.

The incident took place on Friday, as reported by two individuals familiar with the matter. The US federal prison authorities confirmed that an "assault" had occurred, but did not disclose the victim's name. Prison staff promptly took measures to save Chauvin's life and called for emergency medical services. He was subsequently transferred to a local hospital for treatment and examinations.

George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, died on May 25, 2020, after being handcuffed for over 9 minutes during a failed arrest, while nine police officers attempted to subdue him. Chauvin was convicted of murder by the Minnesota judiciary after a highly publicized trial in 2021 and was sentenced to 22 and a half years in prison.

Chauvin's appeal against his conviction was rejected by the US Supreme Court just last week. The rare rulings against police officers in this case have been significant milestones in addressing the racially problematic history of the United States and have intensified the criticism of law enforcement's treatment of black citizens.

George Floyd's death sparked widespread protests in the United States and around the world, highlighting concerns about excessive police force against African Americans.
