Trump's lawyers are asking for his trial to be postponed to 2026
Lawyers for former US President Donald Trump have requested that April 2026 be set as the date for the trial of their client on federal charges against him of conspiring to overturn the result of the 2020 elections, at a time when the prosecution is asking for the trial to begin in early January, and it is one of 4 criminal trials facing Trump while he is fighting His campaign for the Republican nomination to return to the White House again.
Trump's lawyer team said in its review, "The public interest lies in justice and a fair trial, not rushing to issue judgments."
The defense team justified its request that the volume of documents in the case requires months to view them. He added, "If we assume starting from today's date of reviewing the documents, we need to advance at a rate of reading 99 thousand and 762 pages per day."
This, they explained, "means reading Leo Tolstoy's novel War and Peace 78 times a day" until jury selection.
Judge Tanya Chutkan is scheduled to issue her decision on the date of this trial on August 28.
Special Prosecutor Jack Smith had said - earlier - that the government's proposed trial date of January 2 represented an appropriate balance between the defendant's right to prepare his defense, and public interest in a speedy trial of the case.
This case is the most serious of the 4 criminal cases facing Trump (77 years old) and resulted in dozens of charges being brought against him, including allegations that he concealed financial payments to a porn star.
The government also accuses Trump of mishandling dozens of classified documents that he transferred from the White House to his residence, and of conspiring with his employees to hide them from investigators.
The former president and his defense team denounced these prosecutions, which they described as politically motivated.
"The current administration has targeted its main political opponent and the main candidate for the upcoming presidential elections with criminal prosecution," his lawyers said Thursday.
Trump's trial dates, in New York and Florida, have been set for March and May - respectively - before the election. As for the trial related to election fraud in Georgia, a date has not yet been set.
