Captured During Battles in Mariupol: Russia Sentences Ukrainian Soldiers

Human rights organizations criticized Moscow for conducting trials of Ukrainian soldiers captured in the occupied Ukrainian territories or in Russia itself.

Russia announced on Wednesday that a court in Donetsk had sentenced three Ukrainian soldiers who were captured during their participation in the fighting in the city of Mariupol after the same court had sentenced three other soldiers to prison the day before.

Approximately 2,500 people were captured by Russian forces after the fall of Mariupol in May last year. Some were transported to Russia, while others were kept in eastern Ukraine to face "trial."

In a statement, the Moscow Investigative Committee stated that Ukrainian soldiers Oleh Kolmychetsky, Dmytro Dobrovolsky, and Oleksandr Romashin were accused of killing eight people in Mariupol.

The statement read, "Between February 24th and April 12th, 2022, Dobrovolsky and Romashin, upon orders from Kolmychetsky, detained civilians near their combat positions before opening fire on them with automatic weapons."

It added, "In total, they were responsible for the deaths of seven civilian men and one woman."

The statement mentioned that a court established by Russia in the Donetsk region of Ukraine, which Moscow refers to as the Donetsk People's Republic, sentenced Kolmychetsky to life imprisonment. The Investigative Committee further stated that Dobrovolsky and Romashin were sentenced to 30 years in prison. The same court had sentenced three other Ukrainian soldiers to life imprisonment the previous Tuesday.
