The US Deploys Its Largest Aircraft Carrier, USS Gerald R. Ford, to the Eastern Mediterranean in a Show of Support for Israel

On October 8th, the Biden administration announced the deployment of the USS Gerald R. Ford, the Navy's largest and most advanced aircraft carrier, to the Eastern Mediterranean as a gesture of support for Israel. President Joe Biden stated, "We'll make sure that they have the help their citizens need and they can continue to defend themselves."

However, despite the Biden administration's intent to signal support, it remains unclear how the presence of the carrier strike group will benefit the situation.

What is the specific role of the carrier and its complement of personnel and aircraft in this context? US fighters will not attack the Gaza Strip, and Israel does not require access to the Ford's radar capabilities. The carrier's anti-missile capabilities seem redundant now that Israel is on high alert.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's conversation with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan raised concerns among supporters of the US-Israel partnership. Blinken seemed inclined to prevent Israel from retaliating for recent attacks, potentially undermining Israel's security.

Israel should be cautious about the Ford's deployment, given the Biden team's ambivalence toward Israel's security needs and their desire to engage with Iran, regardless of its actions. There is a concern that the naval presence may not deter Israel's enemies but rather dissuade Israel from taking retaliatory actions that could escalate the conflict.

Iran's involvement in the current crisis is evident, and Israel might consider striking senior Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps leaders or even Iran's Supreme Leader. While the US Navy would not directly engage Israeli aircraft, there is a possibility they could expose them. Indiscreet US communications monitored by Iranian or Turkish assets could warn Iran of a potential Israeli strike, deterring Israel from proceeding.

In light of these concerns, Israel should express gratitude for the offer of assistance but decline the presence of the Ford strike group. Allowing Israel a free hand to address the situation might be the most helpful course of action.
