United States: Dozens killed and injured in horrific shooting incident in Maine

 


  At least 22 people were killed and dozens more injured in shootings that occurred on Wednesday in the city of Lewiston, Maine, in the northeastern United States, with the perpetrator still at large, according to local media and police reports. The Maine State Police stated in a Facebook post, "There is an active shooter in the town of Lewiston."


NBC News, citing a police source, reported that at least 22 people were killed and between 50 and 60 others were injured on Wednesday in a random shooting in the American city of Lewiston, Maine.


Earlier, the Maine State Police and a local official had reported a shooting on Wednesday evening but did not provide details.


The Maine State Police posted on X: "A person is firing in Lewiston. We ask people to take shelter where they are. Please stay inside your homes, with the doors closed. Law enforcement is currently conducting an investigation at multiple locations."


The Androscoggin Mayor's Office posted two pictures of the suspect on Facebook, stating that he is on the loose.


The mayor requested public assistance in identifying the suspect, described as a bearded man wearing a long-sleeved shirt and jeans, and carrying a rifle at the shooting site.


The Maine Medical Center in Lewiston issued a statement stating that it is "responding to many injuries and random gunfire" and is coordinating with area hospitals to receive patients.


Lewiston is part of the Androscoggin region, located about 56 kilometers north of Portland, the largest city in Maine.


The Sun Journal, citing a spokesperson for the Lewiston Police, reported shootings at three different locations.


An official in Washington reported that President Joe Biden was informed about the incident and will continue to receive updates.
