Critically Important European Summit in Granada Missing Key Figures
Over fifty European leaders converged in Granada, southern Spain, today, with the goal of reaffirming their commitment to addressing critical geopolitical issues. Nevertheless, the absence of the Azerbaijani president and the anticipated non-attendance of the Turkish president cast doubts on the meeting's credibility.
While this third European political group summit carries significant symbolic weight, the non-participation of Ilham Aliyev and the expected absence of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan present challenges for the forum, which primarily seeks to serve as an informal platform for addressing regional conflicts.
Just two weeks after Azerbaijan's surprise assault on Nagorno-Karabakh, which led to the displacement of the region's Armenian population, European officials had hoped to facilitate a meeting between Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. However, Aliyev opted not to travel to Spain in light of indications of European support for Yerevan.
