In a speech, Biden defends the values of democracy and directly attacks Trump.
Biden stated that "there is no doubt" that the Republican Party is currently led by Trump and his supporters. He issued a stark and serious warning about the fate of American democracy, stressing that Trump's ideology, along with the conservatives who support him, constitute a threat to the essence of the nation.
He added that democracies do not necessarily die by force, but they can die when people remain silent, fail to act, or do not condemn attacks on democracy. He also noted that people may be willing to give up their cherished values out of frustration, disillusionment, exhaustion, and feelings of exclusion.
In this speech, which is the fourth that Biden devoted to the topic of democracy, according to the White House, the US President traveled to Arizona, the birthplace of former Republican Senator John McCain. Biden highlighted McCain's friendship with him, despite partisan divisions, as a symbol of the values that Trump threatens.
The American judiciary accused former President Donald Trump, the most prominent candidate in the Republican Party primary elections, of playing a role in the attack on the Capitol building in Washington on January 6, 2021, and of attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential elections.
In a rare move, Biden mentioned his opponent directly in the speech, citing excerpts from Trump's statements. Biden criticized Trump for claiming that the Constitution gave him "the right to do whatever he wants as president" and condemned this "dangerous theory." Trump was also accused of spreading conspiracy theories and trying to divide the country.
Biden considered that his predecessor did not abide by the Constitution, had no sense of duty, and did not respect citizens, but was motivated by revenge and bitterness. He quoted a phrase from Trump's speech in March during a Republican Party convention when Trump said: "I will avenge you."
In this speech, which coincided with the first day of hearings within the framework of an investigation aimed at removing the Democratic president, initiated by Republican lawmakers, Biden stated that “there is no doubt” that the Republican Party is currently led by Trump. The Democratic president in particular expressed frustration with Republicans' "silence" after Trump's "hateful" statements against Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley.
The Republican billionaire considered Milley's actions treasonous and noted that such actions could have been punished by death. Biden, who struggled to generate enthusiasm according to opinion polls, attributed this to his age and stressed that the greater the number of voters, the stronger democracy becomes, with the participation of the entire nation.
