An armed citizens' movement and a Mexican anti-cartel vigilante leader were buried alongside him.

Hipolito Mora, one of the movement's founders, was buried alongside two of his adherents, bringing an end to armed citizen resistance to drug cartels.

Mora, formerly the leader of a self-defense vigilante group, was no longer a danger to the cartel that controlled Michoacan state. It is improbable that the armed farmers' uprising of 2013–2014, which successfully drove out one cartel only to be replaced by others, will be renewed.

Attendees at Mora's burial shied away from giving their names because they feared reprisal from the cartel. Some people hold out hope that Mora's voice will continue to spur change despite the obstacles.

As a result of the cartels' worsening extortion of nearby farms and companies, there are now more financial difficulties and higher prices for necessities. Over the years, drug cartels' influence has increased.
